The photovoltaic panel can be located on a pole or discreetly hidden within the landscaping. During the day, the panel charges the storage battery. A charge controller assures that the battery is not being overcharged, and also controls the lights. When the sun sets, the controller turns on the lights for a preset period of time.

For lighting a mailbox, a low-pressure sodium light is available on a pole. Atop the pole is a small box that contains the battery and charge controller. It operates by a motion detector or for a preset time period.
